About National Women’s Health Week
Every year, the United States Department of Health and Human Services designates the week of Mother’s Day as the national observance for women’s health . This special week was designated to promote the health of the women in our lives by educating them on how to live longer, happier, and healthier lives through continuous, quality healthcare. This May 13th through 19th, celebrate the health of women by increasing your awareness of women’s health issues, participating in promotional healthcare events, and helping the women in your life make health their top priority.
During National Women’s Health Week, encourage the women in your life to take the following steps for improving their health and preventing disease:
- Eat well
A balanced and nutritious diet is the cornerstone for a healthy life. To get the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients the body needs to stay well, it is important to eat a variety of foods. Focus on green, leafy vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean proteins, and fruits.
- Exercise often
Getting in the habit of exercising regularly will not only help to manage weight—it will also help to boost mood, improve sleep, and promote cardiovascular health. Encourage the women in your life to get at least 30 minutes of exercise most, if not all, days of the week.
- Get screened regularly
For women, getting regular screening is especially important for maintaining good health. Tests such as colonoscopies and pap smears can help to detect cancers before they become advanced.
- Save time for relaxation
Relaxation is just as important as periods of physical activity. Encourage the women in your life to take time out of their day for themselves to relax.
- Stay safe
Encourage your friends and loved ones to stay safe and healthy during their everyday lives by avoiding tobacco, wearing a helmet when biking, and wearing seatbelts.
