Did you know that approximately 600,000 individuals suffer from fatal heart attacks and heart disease each year? With heart attacks as the leading cause of death in the United States, it’s no surprise that more than 5 million Americans visit hospitals each year due to symptoms like chest pain and tightness. Accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, Good Samaritan Hospital of San Jose’s Chest Pain Center proudly provides superior levels of service for patients experiencing a cardiac episode.
Traditional hospitals and emergency rooms are often ill-equipped to handle chest pain, heart attacks, stroke, and other vascular and cardiac complications. The Good Samaritan Chest Pain Center staff understands that when it comes to a heart attack, every second counts. That’s why our hospital ensures that both cardiac surgeons and cardiology specialist are available 24 hours a day, using the fastest, most efficient diagnostic testing and electrocardiogram systems.
Because every second counts, make sure you know the warning signs. Acute or chronic chest pain may be the sign of a number of conditions, including:
- Heart attack
- Heart disease and congestive heart failure
- Coronary artery disease
- Blood clots
- Spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
- Pulmonary embolism
While these conditions include some of the most common reasons for serious chest pain, this does not encompass all of the possible causes or complications. For this reason, it is crucial to seek emergency medical care or contact 9-1-1 at the first sign of persistent or serious chest pain.
Here at Good Samaritan Hospital , our cardiac and vascular services include cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, cardiac intensive care units, and cardiac rehabilitation services. To learn more visit our website or contact us at (877) 254-7020 today.

Auxiliary Volunteers Provide Patient Comfort in Over 20 Service Areas | Good Samaritan Hospital of San Jose
You don’t necessarily need to be a physician or a registered nurse in order to help provide patient care. If you’re interested in helping your fellow San Jose area residents during their time of need, then becoming an auxiliary volunteer for Good Samaritan Hospital may be right for you.
Our auxiliary volunteer program, open to both adults and high school students, strives to provide assistance whenever necessary. While volunteering does not include medical services or nursing duties, volunteers do provide a unique and valuable service—providing comfort, friendliness, and social interaction with patients and visitors. While a background in volunteer work or medicine is appreciated, no special skills are necessary in order to become an auxiliary volunteer. Instead, our hospital staff members work closely with our volunteers so that daily tasks are appropriate for their level of experience, personal skills, and overall interests.
Most of our volunteers visit the hospital for least 3-4 hours a week. However, with a number of placement areas and shifts available, the more time you have to volunteer, the better. Our volunteers can work in over 20 different service areas at Good Samaritan Hospital, our Breast Care Center, and our Mission Oaks campus. Some of these volunteer services include:
- Medical, surgical, and rehabilitation services to patients.
- Working at the visitor and patient escort desk.
- Filing paperwork with the medical records department.
- Helping in the labor and delivery department, mother-baby services, and pediatric department.
- Accommodating visitors in the gift shop.
- Working in the cardiac care center.
Our volunteers can also help out in our hospital pharmacy and emergency room doing a number of clerical tasks.
If you’re interested in the Junior Auxiliary program (High School Students) or the Auxiliary program (18 years and up), visit our website for more information and to download our volunteer application. Contact San Jose’s Good Samaritan Hospital online or call (408) 559-2345.
